Time Out for You: An Attitude of Gratitude

Thanksgiving Year-Round

By Liza Rodriguez Krontilik November 14, 2024

Awhile ago, I read a book by Dan Harris called Ten Percent Happier.  In it, Harris tells the story of how he, as a news television journalist, endured a nationally televised panic attack live.  Talk about stressful!  I figured if anyone could shed light on resilience, it would be him after that ordeal.

Harris prided himself on being ambitious and going after his dreams in a highly competitive field.  He was driven to succeed.  He also acknowledged that he is/was his own worst enemy like most of us.  We all have that voice in our head that contributes doubt and feelings of despair.  He was able to tame this voice and reduce stress through meditation.

When I picked up this book, I really wanted to learn more about mediation as a helpful tool.  Alas, it was just not for me.  (Candidly, I have a hard time slowing down the racing of my mind.)  However, I do believe that every book has a kernel or nugget that can be useful.  One such lesson for me was:  If you live with one leg in the future and one in the past, you pee on the present.  When you do this, you're anxious about the future, down on the past and miss out on the present.  This all around is just terrible.  So what's one to do especially with the stress of the holidays here?

Over the years, I have learned that one of the few things we have control over is how we REACT to situations.  On days when I feel disconnected or overwhelmed, I try to take a few minutes to count my blessings.  I remember the family and friends in my life.  I appreciate my health and try to figure out ways I can be better in that area.  My sister in law shared with me she does gratitude jars and jots down happy moments throughout the year and reads them on New Year's Day.  Friends of mine either start or end their day everyday by reflecting or journaling things that they are thankful for.  Others enjoy paying it forward by surprising someone at the drive through.  I have found volunteering is a great way to contribute and give back to those around me too.

Whatever works for you, try finding peace by adopting an attitude of gratitude.  It may help combat stress.
